Winter Weather Update: Ensuring Safe and Reliable Logistics Operations – December 20, 2024

Dear Valued Customer,

As severe cold conditions grip parts of Canada, we want to assure you that the safety of our employees, communities, and the goods we transport remains our top priority. To that end, our logistics partners have implemented enhanced safety measures to navigate the challenges posed by extreme winter weather.

Severe cold and heavy snowfall can significantly impact rail operations, particularly the braking systems. To maintain safe operations, a tiered system is used to adjust train lengths when temperatures drop below -25°C.

At -25°C (Tier 1): Train lengths are restricted to a maximum of 10,000 feet.
At -31°C (Tier 2): The maximum train length is reduced further to 8,500 feet.
At -36°C (Tier 2): Train lengths are further restricted to 8,500 feet, with additional safety measures in place.
These tier restrictions often require additional train starts—up to three in certain cases—to safely transport the same volume of goods. While these adjustments are essential for maintaining safety, they may lead to increased operational complexity, particularly as multiple corridors experience severe weather simultaneously.

Service Update: Thanksgiving Holiday Closure – October 11, 2024

Please note that on On Monday, October 14th, our terminals coast to coast will be closed for pickups and deliveries as we observe and celebrate the Canadian Thanksgiving Holiday.

Service Update: Heated Service Availability – October 10, 2024

Please note that beginning Tuesday, October 15th, our Heated service will be available to safeguard your shipments from freezing, running through April 15th, 2025. If you are shipping temperature-sensitive goods, please plan carefully and ensure that the required temperature and handling instructions are clearly indicated on all shipping documents and labels.

Service Update: National Truth and Reconciliation Day Observance – September 27, 2024

Please be advised that all M-O locations will remain operational on September 30, 2024, Truth and Reconciliation Day. However, due to the observance of this important day and reduced staffing levels, minor service delays should be anticipated.

Service Update: Rail Disruption Updates – August 26, 2024

We are pleased to inform you that, following binding arbitration imposed by the Government and the CIRB, the recent disruption in the rail service is over. CN employees have returned back to work, all embargoes have been lifted and the trains are moving.

What This Means for You:

– Resumption of Rail Services: We have already started shifting our volumes back to CN’s network. While we still anticipate some service volatility in the coming days as CN clears the backlog, stabilized transit schedules will resume across the country.

– Adjustment of Surcharges: We are eliminating the surcharge that was temporarily applied to shipments inbound to Atlantic Canada effective immediately .

We understand the challenges that recent events have posed and will continue to affect us in the coming days. We want to sincerely thank you for your continued trust and cooperation. Service Update: Atlantic Canada Road Contingency – August 22, 2024

Due to CN’s lockout of TCRC employees, Maritime-Ontario has suspended all intermodal service within Canada. M-O will continue daily service from Ontario and Quebec to points in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. Any shipments tendered to M-O to NB, NS and PE will incur a Road Contingency Surcharge. Please note that customers may experience service disruptions as we work through these challenges. If you have any questions regarding this surcharge, please reach out to your account representative or contact our sales department for more information.

We appreciate your understanding and apologize for any inconvenience this situation may cause during the ongoing negotiations.

Service Update: Delays Possible Through Atlantic Canada – August 19, 2024

Due to CN’s issuance of a 72-hour lockout notice to the TCRC, effective immediately Maritime-Ontario is suspending all intermodal movements to Atlantic Canada. Any shipments tendered to M-O on or after this date will incur a Road contingency surcharge. While M-O will continue daily deliveries to Atlantic Canada, customers may experience service disruptions as we work through these challenges.

If you have any questions regarding this surcharge, please reach out to your account representative or contact our sales department for more information. We appreciate your understanding and apologize for any inconvenience this situation may cause during the ongoing negotiations.

M-O Rail Strike Plan – August 19, 2024

In response to potential railway strikes, M-O has developed an action plan to help our customers prepare in advance. Below, you’ll find the current shipping ingate cut-off dates for units to arrive before any possible labor disruptions. Please ensure that pickup appointments are scheduled by 3:00 PM on the specified cut-off dates to allow enough time for your shipments to be ingated. Note that these dates may change as the situation evolves, and we will provide updates as needed.

Additionally, M-O will be placing an embargo on all LTL Temperature-Controlled and Hazardous Materials cargo across our network, effective August 15, 2024. Limited temperature-controlled truckload services to Western Canada will be available on a spot-quote basis. LTL services from Brampton and Montreal to Atlantic Canada will incur OTR Surcharge pricing and will also be subject to availability.

Service Update: Delays in Western Canada Due to Wildfires – July 23, 2024

Please note that evacuations and highway closures caused by the wildfire near Jasper National Park have resulted in delays for volumes moving in and out of Vancouver. Rail operations in the affected area have been stopped, and trains are being diverted and staged until service can resume. We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as soon as we have more information on the expected duration of these delays.

As reported earlier this morning, Crowdstrike has identified a global issue which has impacted connectivity to some of our key services. Service Update: Delays Anticipated Due to CN System Updates on July 14, 2024 – July 12, 2024

Please be advised that CN will be conducting system updates affecting gate operations on July 14, 2024, between 03:00 and 06:00 EST. During this period, delays may occur at the following locations:

Service Update: St. John’s Pier Access Delays – June 21, 2024

Please note that service delays may be possible from June 20, 2024 to July 20, 2024  as a result of construction in the downtown core affecting the main access to the St. Johns Pier. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and provide more detailed updates as they become available.

Service Update: TRCR Negotiations Update – June 7, 2024

Please note that while the reply deadline from the CIRB has been extended to June 14 and negotiations continue, a work stoppage is not likely to occur before mid to late July.

There are currently no delays as a result of these negotiations, and schedules are continuing as planned. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide any updates as they become available.

Please note that as a result of a train disruption near Hinton, Alberta, shipments may experience delays of up to 48 hours as the backlog is cleared and traffic is expedited through the area. We are monitoring this situation closely, and will continue to provide updates as they become available.

Service Update: Potential Delays Expected on April 8 Due to Solar Eclipse – April 5, 2024​

Please be advised that deliveries and pickups in Southern Ontario, Montreal, and parts of Atlantic Canada on Monday, April 8, may experience delays of up to 24 hours due to anticipated traffic congestion, as the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse is expected to attract large crowds to these areas. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide more specific updates if service delays occur.

Service Update: Special Weather Statement for Calgary – March 19, 2024​

Please note that delays may be possible throughout Calgary, AB as a result of a significant weather change this week, bringing cooler temperatures and the potential for 15 to 25 cm of snow. This expected front will also bring heavy snow, starting this evening in west-central Alberta and spreading southeast on Wednesday and Thursday. Over the next 48 hours, parts of southern Alberta could see snowfall totals of 15 to 25 cm, with even higher amounts possible over the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. Snowfall warnings are likely. We will continue to monitor the situation closely, and provide any service updates as they become available.

Please be advised of anticipated severe weather in Atlantic Canada, lasting from today until Saturday morning. This forecast includes significant snowfall and freezing rain, which may result in service disruptions, especially impacting our terminals in NL, NS, PEI, and NB. Service Update: Delays Possible in NB due to Extreme Rainfall and Wind – February 27, 2024

Please note that Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for most of New Brunswick, effective from Wednesday (February 28) morning until Thursday (February 29) mid-day. The statement warns of significant rainfall and high wind gusts in various parts of the province which could cause delays of up to 24-48 hours. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available.

Service Update: Potential Delays due to CN System Failure – October 3, 2023

Please note that delays may be possible as CN is currently experiencing a networkwide system failure that is impacting inbound/outbound movements of containers through the intermodal terminals. We are awaiting further details as well as an estimated restoration time. We will post further details once available. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience(s) experienced related to these delays.

Service Update: Delays expected in NB and NS due to Hurricane Lee – September 15, 2023​

Please note that due to the anticipated tropical storm conditions and coastal flooding over portions of Atlantic Canada this weekend, delays are expected at our terminals in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

As per CN:
Effective from 0700 on Saturday, September 16, 2023, CN Rail will suspend all regular scheduled service in the Moncton and Halifax areas. Service will remain suspended until at least 1400 on Sunday, September 17, 2023. The resumption will depend on the impact and duration of the storm. We will be monitoring the conditions through the weekend and will resume business as soon as safe operating conditions return.

Service Update: Delays in BC Due to Forest Fires – August 18, 2023

Please note that delays may be possible due to continued forest fire activity throughout BC.

As per CN:

-Train operations have been suspended west of Ashcroft and Kamloops, BC until further notice.
-All the trains have been cancelled at Vancouver and Kamloops, BC.
-Service will resume gradually as conditions in the area stabilize.

Service Update: Possible Oceanex Delays into NL – April 5, 2023

Please note that yesterday’s Oceanex Avalon vessel was unable to depart on schedule due to a crane malfunction at the Port of Montreal. Crane operations are expected to resume as of April 7th, however delays may be possible in the interim while Oceanex works to resolve their operating plan. We will continue to monitor the situation, and provide updates as they become available.

Please note the following weather alerts for the terminals listed below, we will continue to monitor the situations and provide updates as they become available.

Nova Scotia

Due to a complex weather system, snow is expected to spread across Nova Scotia from west to east and then change to rain. Periods of rain or drizzle will affect most of the province on Wednesday, March 15, but will change back to snow Wednesday evening and could give accumulations of up to 10 cm before ending early Thursday morning.

New Brunswick

Snow is forecasted to develop in the south this afternoon, spreading northward by late evening. Snow will taper to flurries Wednesday afternoon, but persist over the Acadian Peninsula. Visibilities may be reduced due to blowing snow on Wednesday morning along the Acadian shores. Snow may become mixed with rain in the southeast by Wednesday morning.

Ontario & Quebec
Please note that parts of Ontario and Quebec are expected to see a dangerous, wintry mix of ice, freezing rain, and snow starting on Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. We are anticipating delays with cargo moving to/from Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Pickup and delivery delays should also be expected as the system moves through. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused by these delays.

Sydney, NS
Please note that our terminal will be closed today due to the weather resulting in 10-35 cm of snow.
Pickups and deliveries will resume once it is safe to do so.

Newfoundland
Heavy snow, ice pellets, freezing rain and strong winds will impact eastern Newfoundland through Tuesday. 20-40 cm of snow is forecast for parts of the northern Avalon including St. John’s. Strong wind gusts are expected to peak near 90 km/h, which could lead to blizzard-like conditions for places like St. Johns and surrounding communities along the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Dangerous travel conditions are likely and power outages and cancellations are possible.

Please note that our terminal will be closed today due to weather conditions.

– Gander, NL
Please note that due to the weather, our terminal is operational, but delays are expected.

– Cornerbrook, NL

Service Update: Weather Alerts – January 26, 2023

Brampton
Clean-up efforts are underway in the GTA from last night’s storm. Our P&D operations have resumed, but delays are anticipated as the snow-clearing continues across the city.
Line haul services will resume this morning between Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.

Montreal
Additional snowfall amounts near 5 cm are expected this morning. Snow will be accompanied by moderate winds, producing blowing snow at times.
P&D Operations have resumed but we do anticipate some delays around the city.

Edmundston NB
Due to heavy snowfall, the terminal will be closed today for all pickups and deliveries.

PEI
Bridge closures this morning, due to high winds have impacted transfers to the island. Maximum wind gusts of 100 km/h are expected. P&D Operations across the island will be limited.

A Texas low will bring heavy snow into the GTA Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. Snowfall accumulations of 10 to 15 cm are possible, with locally higher amounts of up to 20 cm. Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. Line haul services between Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa will be limited this evening with operations resuming once it is safe to do so. Customers should anticipate delays with pickups and deliveries across the eastern network as the system moves through.

Moncton, Saint John & Edmundston

Regular operations have resumed across the region, while clean-up efforts continue after the outcome of yesterday’s storm. 

Charlottetown

Our terminal is operational this morning, however, service delays are expected due to the bridge restrictions put in place at 0652 hrs. as a result of high winds. We are monitoring the conditions and will resume service once it is safe to do so.

Brampton

A Texas low is expected to bring snow to the area Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. Snowfall accumulations of 10 to 15 cm are possible, with locally higher amounts of up to 20 cm. We are monitoring this system closely and will continue to provide updates as they are available.

Please note that our terminals are all operating at reduced capacity today due to the snowfall impacting central and southern New Brunswick and PEI. Snow will continue today and tonight with total amounts expected to reach 15-25 cm. We will focus all P&D efforts locally in the city and resume outlining points once it is safe to do so.

Weather Alert: Freezing rain is expected in Southern New Brunswick this Saturday Morning until Saturday evening. Our terminal is still operational but customers should anticipate some delays with pickups and deliveries as the system moves through the area.

Weather Alert: A winter storm warning is in effect with snowfall amounts of 10-15 cm expected by this evening. Our terminal is still operational but customers should anticipate delays with pickups and deliveries as the system moves through the area.

Service Update: Intermodal Delays in Brampton – January 13, 2023

Please note that we are experiencing some delays with our intermodal movements to and from the Brampton Terminal. On Sunday, January 8th, 2023 CN implemented a new terminal operating system that has caused some delays within their Brampton Terminal. We have been advised that additional resources have been deployed to the front lines to assist with the yard activities and to help clear some of the congestion within the terminal. In the short term, we anticipate 24-48 hour delays for departures and arrivals until the system has fully stabilized.

Service Update: Possible Delays in Newfoundland – January 9, 2023

Please note that there may be service delays of 24-48 hours starting on January 10th, due to an incoming storm. There is a chance of light snow from early morning until mid-morning, becoming heavy snow until late evening, estimating a total of 20 cm – 32 cm. Ottawa
Snowfall in and around the Ottawa area is making travel difficult. While our P&D Operations are active customers should anticipate delays with all pickups and deliveries.

Saskatoon
Snowfall with total amounts of 10 to 15 cm is expected as snow continues through parts of central Saskatchewan and west-central Manitoba. The snow will gradually taper off through the day on Wednesday and warnings will be ended.

Ontario and Quebec
Both provinces are expecting a major winter storm starting today and lasting until Saturday. Visibility may be reduced to zero at times due to expected wind gusts of up to 90 km/h causing widespread blowing snow. With the snowfall amount expected to be 5-15cm by Saturday morning, and flash freezing producing icy conditions, there are possibilities of utility outages. We are monitoring the conditions by the hour. Customers should anticipate delays with pickups and deliveries across the GTA & GMA.

British Columbia
A Pacific frontal system combined with the cold Arctic airmass over B.C. is bringing another round of snow to the South Coast this morning. Hazardous winter conditions are expected, including heavy snow, freezing rain, and heavy rainfall, starting today and lasting into Saturday. Travel conditions will be challenging due to this weather, and localized strong winds will bring the windchill values down to -15. Customers should anticipate delays with pickups and deliveries.

Alberta / Saskatchewan / Manitoba
Extremely cold wind chill values between -40 and -50 will moderate in most regions later today. Temperatures will be very cold again tonight in some areas in Northern Alberta. Temperatures are expected to be milder for the entire province by the end of this weekend. Delays should be anticipated for all pickups and deliveries across the region.

New Brunswick / Nova Scotia
Rain, heavy at times is expected.
Total rainfall: 30 to 50 mm with higher amounts locally.

PEI
Strong winds that may cause damage are expected with wind gusts anticipated to reach up to 90 km/h. Delays should be anticipated for all pickups and deliveries across the island.

Newfoundland
Strong winds and a wintry mix of precipitation are expected on Christmas Eve in western, central, and eastern Newfoundland. Wind gusts of 80 km/h(up to 140 km/h along areas of the west coast) are expected overnight and into Saturday evening.

Marine Atlantic
Marine Atlantic advises customers that due to impending weather conditions the following changes have been made to our schedule:
• North Sydney to Port aux Basques Friday, December 23, 2022 at 2315 is now scheduled to depart Saturday, December 24, 2022 at 2315.
• Port aux Basques to North Sydney Friday, December 23, 2022 at 2330 is now scheduled to depart Saturday, December 24, 2022 at 2330.

British Columbia

There is an expected snowfall accumulation of 10-15cm today in Metro Vancouver, Sunshine Coast, Gibsons to Earls Cove, and East Vancouver Island – Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay. Snow is predicted to taper off near noon on Vancouver Island, and later this afternoon on the mainland side.

An additional 5-10cm is expected from this evening into Wednesday morning for the southern sections of the Strait of Georgia, from Victoria to Qualicum Bay and near Sechelt.

Terminal Operations remain closed at this time and will resume once it is safe to do so.

Customers should anticipate delays of 24-48 hours.

Alberta
Extremely cold wind chill values of -40 and colder will continue through this week in Calgary and Edmonton. The coldest wind chill values will occur overnight and in the early morning hours. A warming trend is expected by the weekend.

Saskatchewan
Saskatoon & Regina are experiencing extremely cold wind chills of -40 to -50. This period of extreme cold values is expected to continue through the week, and to moderate by the weekend.

Ontario
Precipitation in Toronto may begin as rain or snow late Thursday before possibly transitioning to rain in many areas early Friday. Temperatures are expected to plummet on Friday leading to a potential flash freeze for locations that receive rainfall. Rapidly falling temperatures will be accompanied by strong to potentially damaging winds along with snow that may be heavy at times. Blizzard conditions are possible late Friday into the weekend for areas downwind of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

A multi-day lake effect snow event is expected into the weekend in the wake of the system for locations east of the Great Lakes. While there is high confidence in a high-impact winter storm, the details regarding wind speeds, precipitation types and amounts remain highly uncertain at this time. Please monitor your local forecast and the latest alerts for your area.

Quebec
An intense low-pressure system will move into the province of Quebec on Thursday evening and affect the province until Saturday. Significant snowfall amounts, strong winds and blowing snow are expected over areas north of the St Lawrence River, while over the areas to the south, some of the precipitation will fall as rain. Freezing rain is likely in the snow-to-rain transition area. As there is some uncertainty as to the system’s track, it is still too early to provide details regarding expected precipitation amounts. Please monitor your local forecast and the latest alerts for your area.

Moreover, beginning on Friday, there will be a run of large tidal amplitudes. The possibility of a storm surge will have to be monitored from Quebec City to the east.

On Saturday afternoon, in the wake of the system, snow squalls will also be possible over southern parts of the province with the passage of cold air over the Great Lakes. The arrival of this cold air will see temperatures drop below seasonal values on Sunday and early next week.

British Columbia
Due to a low-pressure system landing in Washington State this evening, the southern part of British Columbia is expecting another round of snow. The outflow winds will result in heavier snowfall of up to 15-20cm in Victoria, Malahat Highway, Southern Gulf Islands, Lake Cowichan, Port Renfrew, and East Vancouver Island from Duncan to Fanny Bay. Snow is expected to taper off by late Tuesday morning on Vancouver Island, and Tuesday afternoon on the mainland side.

Saskatchewan
Extremely cold wind chill values of -40 are expected to continue this morning, and throughout the week in Alberta; especially overnight and during the early hours of the morning. A warming trend is anticipated by the weekend.

Manitoba
The western half of Canada, especially the prairies, is dealing with temperatures of -30 to -40 due to an atmospheric shift that has brought in a piece of the polar vortex.

New Brunswick
A snowfall of 15-25cm is expected over the next 36 hours in southeastern New Brunswick. As the snow continues into Tuesday, it may result in a mixture of rain near the coast.

Newfoundland
St. John’s and Avalon Peninsula North are expecting a heavy rainfall of 40-60mm and high-elevation snow of up to 10cm continuing into this evening.

Ontario:
Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory which will remain in effect for snow this afternoon. Freezing rain possibly mixed with ice pellets is expected this morning before transitioning to snow early this afternoon. Customers should anticipate some delays with Terminal operations as the system moves through the area. Manitoba / Saskatchewan:
A prolonged snow event continues over southeastern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba with some local areas receiving upwards of 20-30 cm of snowfall. Accumulating snow is expected to taper off today for Saskatchewan. Terminal Operations, and movements to and from CN Rail will experience delays during this time. Customers should anticipate a potential 24-48 hour delay as the system moves through the area.

Quebec:
An accumulation of 15 to 20 cm of snow is expected from Friday morning to Saturday morning. We are monitoring this system closely and will continue to provide further updates as they become available.

New Brunswick:
We are currently monitoring a system moving into NB which is likely to produce significant snowfall this Saturday morning into Saturday night.

-Total snowfall: 10 to 20 cm.
-Maximum wind gusts: northeasterly 50 to 70 km/h.

Customers should anticipate some delays as the system moves through the area.
We will monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.

Nova Scotia:
Please note that our terminal in Sydney, NS will be closed today. The storm that made its way through the province early Tuesday into Wednesday morning has resulted in thousands of outages for both homes and businesses in the area. Our operations will resume once it is safe to do so.

Marine Atlantic Ferry Closures:

Marine Atlantic advises customers that due to impending weather conditions the following departures have been cancelled:

-North Sydney to Port aux Basques on Thursday, December 15, 2022 at 1145.
-Port aux Basques to North Sydney on Thursday, December 15, 2022 at 1145.

Impacted passengers will be notified of their rescheduled departure time.

New Brunswick:
Please note that Moncton has received approximately 20cm of snow, and are still experiencing very strong winds. The snow is expected to taper off around 10:00am on December 14, and operations will commence once it is safe to do so. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available. 

Nova Scotia:
Please note that our terminal in Sydney, NS will be closed today, due to weather conditions. We will provide updates once operations resume.

Please note that Hurricane Fiona is expected to approach parts of Atlantic Canada late Friday, September 23 into Saturday, September 24.

In preparation for the storm, CN will:

-Halt all local switching and mainline carload trains in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia from Friday, September 23 at 18:00 to Saturday, September 24 at 18:00
-Close the gates and halt operations at the Port of Halifax, Halifax intermodal Terminal and Moncton Intermodal Terminal between Friday, September 23 at 18:00 to Saturday, September 24 at 18:00

Train departures are expected to be delayed 48-72 hours, and currently the Friday night train departure has been cancelled.

These plans are subject to change based on weather and track conditions, and we will continue to monitor and communicate additional information as it is made available.

Service Update: Halifax Delays Update – July 25, 2022

Please note that on July 21st, CN engineers conducted a flash inspection which resulted in the removal of a track from service in Halifax, NS. This removal has caused delays of 48-72 hours, and while it is expected to take several days to complete the repairs, and there is no formal timeline for resolution, CN has stated that additional crews will be flown in to assist with the required work. We will continue to work with CN and update with any information as it is provided to us.

MONTREAL DELAY’S – JUNE 4, 2021

Highway 40, Eastbound is currently closed to traffic in Montreal’s West Island, as work crews dismantle a crumbling traffic sign near the Morgan exit.
As of 10:43 am this morning the sign has been removed and they are expecting to get all lanes reopened by noon today.

OCEANEX DELAY – MAY 31, 2021

Due to a mechanical failure that was identified on the Oceanex Connaigra during its return voyage from St. John’s to Montreal which required immediate repair before sailing to Newfoundland again, there will be a delay. We expect that the Oceanex Connaigra will return to service for the Saturday, June 5th scheduled sailing from Montreal.
